Karstadskaret

This site offers a unique opportunity to study one of the largest visible detachment zones in the world. The conglomerates and the mylonites beneath the fault are gradually transformed into finely crushed rocks within the detachment zone. At the same time, there is a clear boundary against the Devonian conglomerates lying above the fault plane.

Periods of fault activity are documented by black, fine-grained rocks along the fault plane. These formed when the rocks melted as a result of frictional heat during movement along the fault. Such rocks, called pseudotachylite, are direct evidence of seismic activity along the Nordfjord–Sogn detachment zone.
