Storehesten (Kvamshesten)

This is a spectacular hike to the summit of Storehesten, which rises 1209 metres above sea level. The route begins in the lowlands and passes through a strongly deformed rock called mylonite. This rock formed in a shear zone several kilometres wide, the Nordfjord–Sogn detachment zone, which extends up towards the Dalsfjord fault. The fault marks the boundary against the conglomerate.

In the transition between mylonite and conglomerate, you find impressive breccias and earthquake rocks, so-called pseudotachylite, a black glass formed by intense friction during earthquakes. These can be observed along the fault plane, which is exposed at the foot of the cliff below the Devonian rocks.
Near the cabin, you find large conglomerate sediments that testify to dramatic geological processes in the area. At the summit, a fantastic view awaits, making the hike well worth the effort.
